The Gentleman's Questby Deborah Simmonsreviewed by Cybil SolynFebruary 2010, 288 pages, Publisher: Harlequin, ISBN: 0373295804 Back Cover Blurb: Christopher Marchant's mood matches the storm clouds that gather above his mansion. Yet when lightning illuminates a stranded beauty he must do as any gentleman would. Although, once rescued, she must be on her way…. But if Hero Ingram leaves empty-handed her uncle will punish her. Christopher is caught off guard by her willful rebellion - and he's sure he's caught a hint of vulnerability in her defiance…. As a gentleman he must protect her and make her quest his own. But as a red-blooded male…? She has awoken him from his slumber!
Christopher Marchant has recently had a run in with murderous Druids. Yes, you heard me right - murderous Druids. Luckily for him, he and his sister escaped, but Christopher has become very wary since. No longer is he the trusting man he was before. Which is why although his heart tells him he can trust the unusual Hero Ingram, his mind tells him to beware.
Hero Ingram lives to do her uncles bidding. And this time his bidding is to get an ancient book from Marchant. But when she arrives at his secluded manor she discovers that the book her uncle craves was burned along with a part of the house. Marchant's stories of psychopathic Druids seeking the arcane powers that the book held don't really concern Hero. What does concern her is how distracting Marchant's good looks are. But when it seems those pesky Druids think she and Marchant have a copy of the book hidden away - well, it throws them both into situations where they can't escape one another, or their passions.
This book is obviously part of a series and although I didn't have trouble following the plot, I did have trouble getting into the novel because there was a lot of stuff going on that was talked about but not gone into in much detail. Maybe if I had read the previous books I wouldn't have found the pace of this novel so slow and the read just plain dull. As a rule, I really enjoy Simmons' books, and although I thought Hero and Marchant were interesting characters I just wasn't interested in the story. I'm sure it doesn't help that I don't like mystery stories. The mystery plot dragged this story down, and in a romance with only 288 pages there really shouldn't be a slow moment at all.
Bottom Line I think if you've read the other books in this series, and/or you enjoy a good mystery, then you may like this book. For me though, it wasn't a good or bad read - it just was something I had to get through.
